Mr. Etiquette: Knots Landing

A man’s knot is an expressive form of who he is and his sense of class which is worn all day. It says more than you think and how it lands for others can be telling a story about you that you may have no idea you’re telling. Hopefully, after reading this, you’ll realize what you’re saying to the world without saying a word.

Today’s modern man is subject to one rule of thumb if he wants to be successful and look like a million bucks. YOUR SHIRT AND TIE MUST COINCIDE AND STAY SHARP. Luckily, to accomplish this it isn’t that hard.

What I endorse is the spread collar shirt (shown in image) with a Double Windsor knot (show in video). The Double Windsor is a wide knot that, when done right. See the video attached on how to tie this knot but the idea is to have a wide, medium-sized knot (don’t over exaggerate the knot and make it the size of a fist), with no dimples in the knot, and no more than 2 semi-tight folds in the highest part of the hang of the tie.

With a spread collar and a tight Double Windsor, you can turn your cheapest suit and add at least $200 to its perceivable value. Just make sure your dress shirt coincides with the tie which something I’m sure I will touch on in the future because I can already see the e-mails flowing in. HERE’S A TIP: If you feel like you look like your 8th Grade Science teacher (i.e. short-sleeve shirt with a tie, button-down collar with a wide-knot, or cross-colored plaid prints), undress and start again!
